Guidance & Counseling
Guidance And Counselling:
Guidance is as
old as man himself. It is based upon the fact that human beings are in
need of help. We find hardly any individual in this world, who is
self-sufficient and who does not need the help of any body.
Guidance is applicable to the student's educational, social, moral,
emotional, health, vocational and leisure time needs. It implies the
help of personal nature which is planned to help individual to solve
problems that emerge out in daily life. It is admitted fact that
Guidance is continuous and is required in every walk of life. We only
help a person in determining, analysing and understanding what his
faculties, potentialities, interests, intelligence, limitations and
aptitudes are.
Guidance is invariably preceded by qualifying adjective such as
educational, social, vocational, physical and hygiene guidance. These
terms depict the type of problem on which guidance is given.
NEED OF GUIDANCE:
IN SCIENTIFIC AGE,
SOCIETY IS GROWING MORE AND MORE COMPLEXAND THE INDIVIDUAL HAS TO
PHASE MUCH PROBLEMSOF LIFE FOR A BETTER ADJUSTMENT IN A SOCIAL
STRUCTURE. IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION, GUIDANCE HAS BECOME NECESSARY
PROGRAMME DUE TO DIVERSIFICATION OF COURSES. EVERY INDIVIDUAL HAS TO
CHOOSE THE RIGHT PROFESSION FOR HIS FUTURE LIFE.OUR SOCIETY IS BESET
WITH CONTRADICTIONS, UNCERTAINNTIES AND AMBIGUITIES WHICH PUT MORE
STRAIN AND STRESS ON THE INDIVIDUAL.GUIDANCE IS NEEDED TO SOLVE THESE
COMPLEXITIES OF LIFE. ONE OF THE CHIEF DEFECTS OF THE PRESENT SYSTEM
OFEDUCATION IS THAT THE TALENTS OF THE INDIVIDUALS ARE NOT BEING
PROPERLY HARNESSED.
AIMS AND GUIDANCE:
Aims of the guidance are to
help the individual :
1. To understand himself.
2. To make the most of his capacities, interests and other qualities.
3. To adjust himself satisfactorily to varied situations within his
total environment.
4. To develop the ability to make his own decisions wisely and solve
his problem independently.
5. To make his own unique contributions to the fullest possible
extent.
Civil Service After Class XII?
The second Administrative Reforms
Commission ( ARC), headed by Veerappa Moily, has suggested that
students on completion of class XII should be selected for a three-
year special designed course, tailored to meet the essential
requirements of the modern and responsive civil service.
The purpose is that if the school pass outs are selected for a career
in civil services, they will come with more commitment and right
attitude to serve.
If recommendations are accepted, one will be able to join the civil
services after completion of class XII and need not wait for
graduation results. The idea is commendable.
Students would be selected for the course through an all-India test on
the lines of the National Defence Academy. Those who qualify the test
will pursue a three - year course to be provided by the National
Institute of Public Administrations (NIPA).
Those who do not want to pursue a career in civil services will be
permitted to exit and pursue their interest elsewhere.
Those who pass the finals would be awarded graduation degrees.
The entrance examination after class XII will be conducted by the
Union Public Service Commission. The existing age criteria will be
accordingly lowered.
You Are As Big As You
Think:
Attention to detail is regarded as a sign
of efficiency. Whatever we set out to achieve, details are usually far
more important than we are likely to suspect. Nevertheless, attention
to detail can be carried to excess.
Some people, in their anxiety to do things properly, spend so much
time and energy on details that they lose sight of the main purpose of
their plans. They fuss over trivialities and lose sense of proportion.
In such a situation a useful piece of philosophy to bear in mind is: a
man is as big as the things he worries about.
When an artist paints a landscape, he doesn't concern himself with
individual blades of grass or the multitude of separate leaves on the
trees. He concentrates on a mental impression of the whole scene
before him. He regards the mass shapes of the various features as they
will appear upon his canvas.
He studies the positions of the dominant features, the depth of
perspective, and the relationship of the colour masses. His chief
concern is to achieve balance and a satisfying, artistic result. The
details of his picture fall into place to the extent he considers it
necessary to reproduce them.
We would do well to look upon life as the skilled landscape artist who
gazes upon the scene before him. We should try to visualise the
general prospects before us. We should first of all know where we are
going and why.
Having decided these main issues, we can then select the most
attractive advantages we hope to gain, and the most difficult
obstacles we must overcome before we can reach our goal.
Whenever there is to be tackled, first view the whole task, in a clear
mental picture. Then divide it up into its most important parts. Deal
with each part thoroughly until the details emerge for final
consideration. Think big. You are as big as the thing you worry about!
IDEAS WORK WONDERS:
Success starts with
a thought or an idea. When nourished with hope and confidence and
encouraged by ambition and aspiration, that single idea takes shape as
a dream, vision and goal in stages. You must allow your ideas to grow,
no matter how farfetched or nonconformist they may seem in the
beginning .You must give wings ton your ideas and them fly high. You
must allow your thoughts to take root, no matter how others choose to
regard them. Many great ones, whom the world today worships with awe
and wonder as gifted visionaries, super geniuses or miracle-makers,
were viewed as utopians or mental defunct by several of their
contemporaries. While some may describe your ideas as imagination and
vision, others may dub them as sheer daydreams and idle fantasies. But
the fact remains that ideas, however strange, unorthodox or heretic
they might have seemed at the start, have ultimately wrought miracles,
brought revolutions and built civilisation. Ideas verify rule the
world, and also the minds of men. They contribute to continuing
changes, shape as well as determine the destiny of human beings and
contribute to the growth of civilisations. Every great and grand
accomplishment, whether relating to religion, science, medicine,
industry, technology or sports, which are written in letters of gold
in the history of human advancement, was in the first instance, no
more than a mere idea in the mind of a human being, be he a man or
woman. Revered religious texts, great classics, magnificent monuments,
astonishing scientific discoveries, earth-shaking inventions,
fantastic technological feats like splitting the atom, heart
transplant, humans walking on the moon, unravelling the secrets of
Mars -have all had only 'ideas' at their starting points. Ideas
sprout, blossom and lead to action with knowledge. Therefore, your
success is irretrievably linked to knowledge. Knowledge is strength
and knowledge is power. When you apply your knowledge and understand
your problem, test or interview is automatically.
TIME MANAGEMENT:
"Time
management" is basically
planning and dividing one's time in a constructive way. For instance,
we have a number of activities that have to be taken care of in a
particular period of time. So we should be able to plan our activities
in such a way that we are able to complete all the work in a given
span of time.
It is said that "Time is more
precious than money". This
is because, money lost in business or otherwise, can be gained or
earned again. But time lost, can never come back.
We all grow in time, live in time and ultimately, perish in time. There
may not be an exact definition of time, but we all know what it is and
its great value in a person's life. A man has a lot of wants. We all
want fame, success, money, happiness, love, etc. There is no end to
our desires. However, only a few are successful, prosperous and happy
.These few are the ones who realised the value of time. They made the
best use of time and an enviable position in the society. It must
always be kept in mind that,"Time and tide wait for none".Time can be
spent wisely or foolishly. The choice is ours and so are its
consequences.
A proper use of time means the right use of an opportunity. As a
popular saying goes "A stitch in time saves nine".So, we must ensure
that we make the best use of time in our limited span of life. All
great men are the great economiser of time. They have left their
footprints on the sands of time .We should try to follow the great men
and learn to make the best use of time.
